Hi folks!

The end of 2009 is near and it’s time for some words.

First of all I want to thank my dear B for marrying me in June 2009. She’s the best! Also I want to thank my family and my friends for all the wonderful time we spend together. Last but not least I want to thank YOU for viewing my photos, sharing your photos, giving feedback and comments.

I must admit that I wasn’t very active in landscape photography im 2009 compared to 2005-2008. I’m really sorry for that because I still love photography very much. But my job took too much time.

And here are some of my goals for 2010: taking and sharing more photos again, making and meeting more friends (the real friends, not the facebook-ones, LOL), moving, running a marathon, visiting one exciting country, planting at least one tree (@Voeti: ) and sleeping more that 6 hours a day.

OK, enough for now.

Friday is the big day! I must say, I'm already a bit nervous.

Little story about the photo:
I stood there watching the sky after the rain. As I say the rainbow I took a view through the viewfinder and realized that 24mm aren't wide angle enough for that rainbow. Aaargh!! I ran back to my car like crazy, dropped the wrong lens, grabbed the 17mm and ran back to the place where I took this photo. Fortunately, the rainbow was still there. Phew!
Well, that's whatI love in landscape photography. Sometimes you only have a few seconds for a photo and you have to concentrate 100% to do your best. I'm sure the world could break down behind me, I wouldn't realize it in such a moment. Though that would be a good photo as well ... :)

2008 is almost over and it's time for a short review. As you might remember I quit my job in March 2008. I worked as a financial controller (business administration) for about 8 years and finally found it too boring to do it for the rest of my life. After this big step I went to school for half a year and took lessons in print and web design. Besides to that I worked as a photographer doing business portraits, wedding etc. From now on I'll be working as a webdesigner and photographer. Furthermore, I plan to start my own business in the sector of fine art prints (with photos/paintings from various artists, not only my own photos).

Looking back, I am really happy about the decision I took. So this is my advice for you for 2009: If you don't like your job and you want to do something different, just do it. It's possible if you really want it. As Mr. Obama would say: Yes, we can. :)

Yesterday I re-visited one of the most beautiful places in the Southern Black Forest, called Schauinsland. This is a beech tree that got its shape from the steadily blowing wind.
The weather was really uncomfortable (fog, wind, heavy snowfall, -5°C) but perfect for shots like this one. I'm really happy with how it came out. I didn't convert the photo to b&w but due to the fog there were no colors. So it's a "natural" b&w. :)

It's been a while since I uploaded a photo to this photoblog. Sorry! I'm pretty busy with school (mediadesign, webdesign) and some photo jobs at the moment. One of the projects I've been working on was designing my new website. You can view it here: pabst-photo.de.

About the photo: last week we spend some days in Switzerland and visited some really nice places. This photo was taken from the Furkapass (2.436 m / 7.992 ft.) looking westwards. The highest mountain in the center is the Finsteraarhorn (4.274 m / 14.022 ft.). The lake in the foreground is the Totensee (Death Lake) at the Grimselpass. Strange name for a lake!! As you can see it's already winter in Switzerland. I loved it.
Some technical details: the image consists of 12 photos in portrait format taken in manual mode at f8 and 200mm with a Canon EF 70-200mm 2.8 L (and 5D of course). Stitched and processed in Photoshop. The final image has a size of 19.373 x 3.830 px. With a printing resolution of 300 dpi these are 164 x 32 cm or 65 x 13 inch. I'm going to print this one (and maybe sell it).

Yesterday, I realized I haven't posted a photo for one month! OMG, time flies by so fast!
I've been pretty busy during the last weeks as I have been in school (mediadesign & webdesign) for two months and I had to work on a project. Besides that I'm working on several calendar and fine art print projects to get my photos published and sold one day. I can't earn my living from that (yet) so I'm also doing some portrait shoots now and then. Well, all these activities don't leave much time for taking landscape photos but last Friday I found some hours to visit one of my favorite places in the Northern Black Forest: the Gertelbach Waterfalls. I took this photo from inside the creek, that means I was standing in the water. Found this was the best position. :) Hope I'll find some time to post more photos during the next days as the next school project only starts in 6 weeks.

Water is so powerful. I love it to see and hear the waves crashing into the rocks.

As you can see, we're back from Sardinia (italian island in the Mediterranean Sea). We spent 2 wonderful weeks in the south of the island, driving around with a sweet little car and visiting a lot of beautiful places. More to come within the next days/weeks.
Btw, this is a 10 sec. long exposure with ND400 at ISO50.

Hello my friends!

As I mentioned the other day I have some exciting news. Where do I start? Well, let's try it like this: As you might know, I studied business administration some years ago and since then I'm working as a controller / financial accountant for industry companies. Pretty boring job, you might say. Well, actually it is. But, that was the one life. You might also have noticed that I'm very passionated about photography since a few years. I spend almost every free minute in taking, processing, sharing and selling photos and learning everything about photography. Often I even sleep too less. That is my other life. During the last months I got really unhappy with my regular job (in general, this had nothing to do with the company I was working for) and I realized that business administration isn't the thing I want to do for life and for a living. The wish to live out my passion for photography and for beeing a better photographer and maybe for beeing a professional photographer grew stronger every day.

A few weeks ago I resigned my job and yesterday I had my last day as a controller. From April on I will only live one life. Horray!! :) Maybe I get more sleep then. Or less than ever! :o

I know that hard times will come and that it will take some time to gain a foothold in the photography business. But I want it. And I will make it. For a start I'm going to work as a self-employed photographer. In summer I'll start working in a studio for advertising photography and will do a photographer internship. That's it.

More news? OK. I'm in negotiation with a local art gallery that wants to print and sell my photos online and offline. I'll give you more infos when I made the deal.

Even more news? My personal website http://pabst-photo.de is back online with a new layout (wordpress).

Just a courtyard at night at the home of our friends in Munich. We've been snowboarding/skiing in the Axamer Lizum (Austria) on Saturday. Thank god I wore a helmet cause a skier hit me really hard with his ski pole when we almost crashed. And on Sunday we had a lot of delicious beer, Leberkäs, Obatzda and pretzels at the monastery of Andechs. :-D The weather felt like summer, we had 21°C in the afternoon!! Along this photo of the courtyard I didn't take many more photos. Just enjoyed the time with our friends. Thanks for the nice weekend! :)

This is a night shot! 130 sec. exposure time. I took during the recent full-moon night at 11 p.m. Though it was somewhat bright, it was kinda scary to stand there all alone on the field. There was a dead silence except some little owls screeching in the distance. Goosebumps and wide opened eyes guaranteed!!! Hehe! :)
But somehow I love that feeling ... alone in the dark, blind, helpless, being at the mercy of nature. It shows me how small and weak we are ... I just remember last year when I spend a whole night all alone on a mountain in the Black Forest. All alone with the owls circling above my head ....

Taken last weekend on a photo-trip with some members of the Flickr Klub Karlsruhe. This is a lake close to the Rhine south of Karlsruhe.

I took this photo with the Canon EF 15mm 2.8 Fisheye lens I rented fo the weekend. Funny to look through and to take some silly ultra distorted and bended shots at the first moment. But I realized very quickly that it's pretty difficult to use this lens in a sensible manner. But I loved it. I think I'll rent it again very soon (too expensive to buy). It's challening, somehow .... OK, I better shut up ...

I took this on a photo-tour with u.linder on the top of the Allalin (Saas Fee, Switzerland, 3.500m / 11.483ft). As we reached this rock the sun just disappeared behind the 4.027m high Allalinhorn behind us. This was the first and last picture I took with a little light left on the rock. We waited a while to see if the sun would wander around the Allalinhorn but it went down behind it. Bad luck! Anyhoo, I like the picture. It reminds me of that wonderful silence up there (except Uli's cough. LOL).

Btw, behind the rock it goes down a few hundred meters. Must be thrilling to cut a nice "first track" into that hillside on a snowboard ... (w/o triggering an avalanche, of course).

This is a part of the mountain Allalin (3.500 m / 11.483 ft), Switzerland. There's a fixed rope route leading to a monument. Maybe we'll climb to this peak next summer. Must be a fantastic view from there.

Beside snowboarding I spent some time taking photos on the top of the mountain Allalin (3.500 m / 11.483 ft). To the right side the mountain arises to the Allalinhorn (4.027 m / 13.212 ft). I'll upload a picture of the Allalinhorn later.
The air is pretty thin up there. Moving fast isn't recommended. :)

I found this abandoned place in Karlsruhe. It's the former location of an OPEL car dealer. Don't know what it will be used for in the future. Of course I went inside the building! Believe me, that was so disgusting! I think a few hundred doves live in there which all took off went I entered the buidling. I could stay inside because of the dust they raised. And the ground was covered with crap and dead doves. Uaaargh!!!

I took this picture back in May somewhere in the Black Forest. Since then I reviewed it a hundred times trying to decide whether it is a good photo and worth to show or whether I should better delete it. The item I wasn't sure about is the huge rock in the center of the picture which dominates the whole composition. Positioning such a huge object in the center of a picture is far away from all classic composing rules. But, I'm now sure that this is acceptable in this case because the photo tells a story. For me it's about transitoriness. Think about all the elements surrounding the rock: the stairs (symbolizing human beings), the water, the plants. Everything exists just a short moment compared to the life-time of the rock. Maybe the people forget this path one day, maybe the small creek dries out and the plants die off (because of global warming?). Maybe some day the rock will be naked and bleak and all life around it will be gone. But, the huge rock will always be there. It will always dominate this scene.
Maybe this is a little bit too philosophic but that's just me ...

This is Mari, my first Model. We spent almost 6 hours in the studio on Sunday evening. Thank you for your time and your patience, Mari! Furthermore I have to thank Tobi for supporting us during my first studio shooting.

Seeing that this was my first serious portrait shooting in a studio I'm pretty happy with the results. Maybe I'll upload more photos soon. I'm sure you find some details that can be done better in both taking and processing these photos. But I think a first attmept hasn't to be 100% perfect.

I hope one more image of these beautiful beech trees is OK for you. Also found a little time to write down some thoughts in my humble English. Please excuse this.

First of all: this is not taken with an IR filter (infrared). The white parts are snow.

Well, I really love the two previous images "reloaded" and "the beech tree" because they are very very close to what I had seen through the viewfinder. The colors and the dynamic ranges are very close to reality and I only did some basic processing. Which is good. I'm very proud of it because it shows me that a heavy treatment isn't absolutely necessary to create a good image. I'm pretty sure these pictures wouldn't look very different when taken on film.

Nevertheless I have to admit that I like this 3rd image the most. The b&w conversion and a few steps of processing give it a surreal look and separate it from the "normal" images (in my eyes). And this is one of the most important intentions why I'm into photography since two years: I try to show other people how the world looks like through my eyes, in my fantasy, in my mind. And I really love this world.

But wait! What if this "processed world" is the real world and what we all see every day through our blinded eyes isn't real?? Which world would you prefer? Real or unreal? Blue or red pill? ;-)

I took this yesterday on the Schauinsland which is a plateau in the South Black Forest. It was pretty cold but the sunset was worth it.

At the moment I have a lot of fun to take photos of all the small things. But don't be alarmed, the wide angle lens is just having a break. Promised! :)

This is taken with the 24-105mm lens. Love the bokeh here.

Well, the weather is still pretty crappy and bars me from taking some nice landscape photos with my new camera. But hey: I'm flexible! :) I met some photo buddies yesterday to hang around in the city and to take some architecture pics. I'm really happy with the results though these are all concrete pics which differ strongly from my recent works. But, these pictures show the quality the camera and the lenses provide and now I'm looking forward to having better weather, maybe at the weekend. Wish me luck! :)

Anyway, it's just a test. The weather wasn't so nice yesterday though I wanted to test the wide angle lens (Canon 17-40mm 1:4L USM) and the ND-filter on the new camera (Canon EOS 5D). Not bad, I think ...
